Motability

Motability is a scheme which allows recipients of the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance to use the allowance for the hire purchase or contract hire of a car, powered wheelchair or scooter. Contract hire of a car is the most popular option, where the recipient, parent or carer receives a new car for a period of 3 years. There may be an up front fee depending on the make and model of car chosen, but insurance, servicing and breakdown cover charges are all included. After 3 years, assuming that the benefit is still applicable, a new car may be applied for.
