Ups and Downs
on 22 Jun 2007
It's funny how life goes in waves. Only a couple of months ago we all felt at the end of our tether, finding it very difficult to cope with our son's behaviour and not knowing which way to turn. No one was there to help us and it seemed that we were completely out on a limb. Now, in a very short space of time, life seems to have got quite a lot easier.
Our son's behaviour is improving thanks, in part, to some practical strategies researched from various literature and also a greater understanding of him through his assessment with a psychologist. We are also due to see a community psychologist soon who will be able to give us some further ideas and strategies. A fantastic social worker attached to the Children’s Disability Team has proved invaluable ,as well as being at the end of the phone if I have any queries, she has also done her best to provide us with information on further services. In addition we are to be assessed for Home Start which will provide us with support on the dreaded Saturday mornings! We all know it is good to talk to other parents and share ideas, so I was pleased to find a support group that we "qualify" for. Having no underlying diagnosis for either of our children means that we don't quite fit with the majority of support groups around so this is a real find!
However, I am trying to not get complacent as I know that although things can improve quickly they can certainly deteriorate even quicker. Just as I am not quite sure how things have started to come together, I will be equally baffled as how things will inevitably enter a bumpy phase. Don’t get me wrong, I am not being a moany old pessimist for the sake of it. Instead I feel I am being a realist for things never seem to be on an equal footing for long and I really don't know why this happens. I don't think that we do anything any different but life is certainly a roller coaster ride so I am enjoying this high before I feel queezy on the out of control down!
For your information, I have included an email I received from Pamela Shaw at Every Disabled Child Matters. If you have not done so already then please join up!

"The Every Disabled Child Matters campaign has set a target of 25,000 supporters by July. With two weeks to go, we need 5,000 more.
Help us meet and beat our target. Please send this message on to your whole email address book, to your company, your school or to any other email lists that you are on. Ask everyone you know to sign up at http://www.edcm.org.uk - and then pass this message on to their own address books....
Thanks as always for your support, and please do get in touch if you have any questions.
Best wishes
Pam"
